PROJECT
Rotary Cowshed
Kaponga
DESCRIPTION
This new 60-bail rotary, completed in 2023, is one of the largest we’ve built. Designed around the Chapman Square layout, the shed was extended to provide a larger indoor space, with an additional wing added down one side of the building. This wing houses a tool and implement shed with roller door access, a separate metre room, and a chemical room with a roller door for easy unloading of chemicals using a tractor and front-end loader. It also features a spacious kitchen, with a large viewing room off it offering a comfortable vantage point to watch the milking process.
On the opposite side of the platform, a large vet room is equipped with a window that provides access to the vet platform, while another window allows access to the undercover vet race and head bale.
The yard is rectangular in shape and includes a High Runner backing gate for efficient cattle handling. A flood wash system is in place, which forces greenwater through small pipes in the concrete yard floor, washing the yard down as the water flows toward the end. The shed features an impressive effluent system, utilizing a screw press to separate solids from liquids. The liquids are held in a sand trap, while the separated liquid is directed to a holding pond and recycled through the flood wash system.
The roof is ventilated to allow hot air to escape and encourage airflow, and a central strip of Clearlite lets in natural light, brightening the shed. All windows are aluminium sliders, providing excellent ventilation on hot days and offering impressive views of the mountain.
The expansive yard area includes various holding pens, an automatic drafting system, and a curved loading ramp designed to optimize cattle flow onto and off stock trucks.
This shed is a perfect example of how a Chapman Square design can be customised to meet specific needs, creating an efficient and comfortable environment for both cows and operators.
